OCEAN WAY DRUMS

ocean way drumsSome people are fortunate enough that when they need great drum sounds, they just call up Allen Sides and book a room at Ocean Way's famous Studio B. Then that person rents a huge collection of the world's finest drums, and hires the world's most renowned drummers and engineers to capture their dream drums with Ocean Way's renowned mics, processors, and console.

Chances are, you're not that person. That's okay; most of us aren't. But that doesn't mean you have to forego the incredible drum sounds you want. Working with all major DAWs as well as functioning as standalone software, the new Ocean Way Drums is the answer for the rest of us.

First, check out the video, and then read on for more details!

Being Discrete
To make Ocean Way Drums, audio gurus Allen Sides and Steven Miller developed a unique, discrete multi microphone recording and mixing technique. They used up to 13 sperate mono and stereo sound sources per instrument, including 3 sets of stereo room mics. You can then independently adjust each drum and cymbal within the kit. From tight and dry to wide and ambient, it's all there for the choosing.

Ocean Way's Mic Locker: It's Better than Yours
Chances are, if you're in the 99% of people who don't have as nice a mic selection as Allen Sides, you'll appreciate the mic selection used to create Ocean Way Drums. Every microphones used for recording Ocean Way Drums were hand picked by Allen Sides from his personal collection. Check them out...

Kick:
AKG D12, AKG D112, Neumann U47 Fet
Snare Top: AKG C12A , Shure SM 57 (custom)
Snare Bottom: Sony 55P
Hi Hat: Sony 55P
Toms: AKG C12A
Overheads: AKG C12
Rooms: Telefunken U47, Neumann M50, Telefunken Elam 251, Neumann KM 54

In addition to the mics, the collection also makes use of Studio B´s custom, one-of-a-kind console, considered to be the most astonishingly clear board in existence. Very little EQ or compression was used, but when it was, highly modified classic gear from Neve, API, Ueri, Fairchild was utilized. But no processing would equal the natural sound of having drums placed in the rear right corner of historic Studio B, considered by most producers and engineers to the "sweet spot" with the most low end punch. Because of the wonderful acoustics, each instrument was able to be recorded at the optimal distance and angle, and with the microphones that best captured the full frequency and dynamic range of that instrument.

Make it easy with Mix Presets
Allen Sides and Steven Miller created 6 "mix presets" per drum kit to instantly provide killer sounding, record quality mixes. Presets can be instantly changed either as an entire set, or, individually per instrument within a drum set. There are 6 seperate pre sets for both the mono snare drum (57) and the stereo snare drum (C12A).

Getting Flexible
Beyond the presets, adjustments can easily be made and saved to all of the individual sound sources within EACH instrument of EVERY drum kit. This, along with control of pitch, pan, envelope, velocity and balance of the stereo submasters, gives users total control of the mix and provides unlimited possiblilites.

Two Editions
As mentioned above, Ocean Way Drums can work as a standalone software package for Mac and Windows, powered by and including Native Instruments Kontakt Player. But it also works with all major DAWs, supporting RTAS, VST, and Audio Units compatibility. You have two ways to experience the flavors of Ocean Way Drums: the Gold Edition (40 Gigabytes of 24bit/48k audiophile samples on 6 Dual Layer DVDs) and the Platinum HD Edition (80 Gigabytes of super high resolution 24bit/96k samples preinstalled on a special 10,000 RPM hard drive, which also includes the Gold Edition and 7 extra kick drums).
